Colloidal Silver - Safe and Effective
Written by M.D. Hamilton
Like the black sheep whose wool is every bit as warm and useful as that of the white sheep, colloidal silver is often shunned, though safe and effective for a number of applications. For centuries, silver's health-giving properties were known to fight infections, whether they were bacterial or viral. Silver's safety and compatibility with the human body was recognized also.

Current Research

Current research shows that colloidal silver continues to fight viruses and infections effectively.

One such study, done in 1991 by Brigham Young University researchers, showed that colloidal silver is lethal to bacteria and viruses, but safe for the human body. That study, which eventually extended to UCLA Medical Laboratories, showed that colloidal silver killed every pathogen in the laboratories, including staph, pseudomonas, anthrax, and HIV.

Controversy

Despite its proven safety and effectiveness, colloidal silver continues to be a controversial topic in medical circles.

Some argue that colloidal silver has a known adverse effect, specifically the supposed toxicity manifested by a bluish tint of the skin if silver is ingested for prolonged periods at high dosages.

Others note that such use is abuse of colloidal silver. Similar risks accompany the abuse of any substance. Every medication has potential side effects, sometimes at low dosages. The singular known side effect of colloidal silver appears only after prolonged use at high dosages.

EPA Threshold

While colloidal silver has one risk, the risk pales in comparison to the multiple dangers of many modern drugs.

Nevertheless, in an effort to ensure safety and health, and to minimize adverse reactions to colloidal silver, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set threshold limits for silver compounds. As long as those limits are held, they say, no bluish tint should occur.

It is only fair to note that the amount of actual silver content in isolated colloidal silver is negligible in comparison to the silver compound products noted by the EPA. Since it has never been shown that isolated colloidal silver products respond in the human body as compounds do, that should not be assumed.

Safe and Effective

While the use of colloidal silver may continue to be a matter of controversy for some, others are finding effective uses for silver. Collidal silver has found its way into hospitals around the world, as illustrated by these four examples.

1. Water purification

Silver has long been used in water purification. Some are finding colloidal silver to be effective in the same process. Hospitals use colloidal silver to purify the water supply and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

2. Catheter sterility

European hospitals, convinced of its antibacterial properties, use silver to coat catheters in order to prevent infections.

3. Burn cream

Silvadiene is used by hospitals as a burn cream for treatment of the most severe burn cases. The silver solution helps prevent infections while speeding the healing of damaged tissues. Silvadiene has gained worldwide acceptance as a USFDA-approved cream treatment for burns.

4. Wound Dressing

Silverlon, another USFDA-approved silver solution, is a dressing for wounds. Silverlon delivers silver ions directly from the dressing into the wound's damaged tissue, speeding up tissue formation for healing, while preventing infection of the wound.

Colloidal silver and other silver products are indeed safe and effective as long as their use is controlled. Since no safe limits have been set for the use of colloidal silver within the body, it is the user's individual responsibility to exercise caution when taking it.
